BRSCC RACEDAY – CADWELL PARK 18th APRIL 2009

The BRSCC Northern Centre ran their first meeting of the season on the full 2.173 miles of a chilly but dry Cadwell Park last Saturday, with 10 races filling a busy timetable.

It was the first chance for Cadwell regulars to see the new Ma5da MX5 Championship and it didn’t disappoint with a full grid of 28 cars lining up for qualifying at 9am. The pace was set by Tom Roche and the 22 year old from Cardiff went on to score a brace of victories to extend his championship lead.

It was a similar story in the Alfashop Alfa Romeo Championship where Adie Hawkins from Bordon, took the chequered flag in both races at the wheel of his distinctive black & yellow Kent Cams backed Alfa Romeo 33.

The Dunlop TVR Challenge returned to Cadwell again for their opening two rounds of the season, as they did last year. The competition amongst the 18 assorted Tuscans, Tasmins, Cerberas and Griffiths’ was fierce with Brands Hatch local Michael Saunders leading the pack home. Michael had to settle for second place in round two as Preston’s Danny Winstanley took the win to add to his earlier second place.

The Mighty Minis always put on a good show and their first race of the season was no exception with Somerset’s Christopher Morgan (pictured) piping Ian Slark to full points by just .349 of a second. The long journey from Plymouth was well worth it for Louise Inch who took the final step on the podium.

The winning margin in the Super Mighty Minis was even tighter where Neven Kirkpatrick edged out his younger brother David in a titanic battle – talk about sibling rivalry! The Guildford based driver made the perfect start in his efforts to improve on his second place in last year’s championship.

Loughborough’s Steve Twist did a tremendous job in his Fiat Uno 1300cc holding off the joint threat of the Greatrex brothers, Jason & Kris, in the Motorlawyers.co.uk Fiat Racing Challenge. In the second Fiat race Steve recorded a DNF leaving the field clear for Mark Smith from High Wycombe to take a deserved win in his Uno, ahead of Simon McFie.

Meanwhile, the marshal’s ranks were swelled by the BRSCC Chairman, Bernard Cottrell and several other Directors who donned the orange overalls to help man the posts. Their help was greatly appreciated and I’m sure they gained a useful insight from the marshals’ perspective.
