CARFEST SOUTH IS A HIT

CATEGORIES:

The BRSCC South Eastern Centre team of marshals & officials who ran the CarFest South hill climb.

Last weekend, the first of the two CarFest events took place at Laverstoke Park Farm, which is the Hampshire home of 1979 F1 World Champion, Jody Scheckter. The BRSCC were contracted to run the hill climb at CarFest South and BRSCC South Eastern Centre officials were given the task of organising it.

This entailed several visits to oversee the transformation of the track and parking area for participants’ cars. To see the difference between the first visit, when there was a buffalo in one of the fields, old farm equipment in other areas, to the final professional result was absolutely amazing.

The hill climb participants were not timed and were divided into two categories. Those who wished to go up the hill at speed were required to wear overalls, helmets and orange wristbands, while those who agreed to drive at less than 40 mph, were not required to wear overalls and helmets and could take passengers providing they were signed on. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was very popular with Chris Evans driving, along with the Comfy Banana Bed, Comfy Banana Sofa and Nick Mason’s Clown Car, which was entered in the Unusual Seven category.

What a brilliant weekend it was! A fantastic opportunity to see Historic F1s, Chris Evans’ Magnificent Seven Ferraris, Nick Mason’s Celebrity Seven, including a Bugatti 1926 Type 35, the Unusual Sevens including Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Seven Design Classics including a Bentley Continental R 1952 and many others. From the old to the new – there were also demonstrations of the Marussia F1 car, driven by former BRSCC member & T-Car graduate, Max Chilton.

The concept of Car Fest is to offer something for all the family, while raising funds for BBC Children in Need, so in addition to the hill climb there were car club displays, concerts and a fantastic air display with Tornados & the Red Arrows. On Sunday afternoon there was a further treat for aviation fans when a Vulcan did a ‘fly past’.

It was a wonderful weekend for everyone who attended. The BRSCC would like to thank the marshals and officials who volunteered their time and services.

CarFest North takes place on Saturday 8thto Sunday 9thSeptember at Cholmondeley Castle in Cheshire. Full details can be found at www.carfest.org
