CATCHING UP WITH THE ALFAS

CATEGORIES:

A visit to Pembrey at the beginning of July marked the halfway point in this year's BRSCC Alfashop Alfa Romeo Championship, and following the last round at Oulton Park the championship is still very much wide open.

2010 Champion Mel Healey (156) continued to head the 2011 points table until last Saturday's round at Oulton, which she missed, as she will the Brands Hatch round later this month, as she is getting married. Mel is now under increasing pressure from Emma Karwacki (147) who took double header full points wins at both Cadwell earlier in the year and again at Pembrey and then followed it up with a Class E win at Oulton to now overtake Mel at the top of the points standings.

Emma and Mel have the luxury of knowing that there will always be enough starters in Class E so they do not fall foul of the minimum starters rule that has handicapped chasers Steve Dymoke, Neil Smith and Sarah Heels.

Neil Smith has again been the outstanding performer in races overall, his ex WTCC 156 proving unbeatable in all six races with his latest outright win coming at Oulton.

With a Class E win in Emma Karwacki's 147 at Snetterton also added to his points tally, he will certainly be in a position to challenge for a repeat of his 2004 and 2008 Championship titles if Roger Evans (GTV), Anthony George (156 Turbo) and Guy Hale (147 3.2) are all competing in Class A1 during the second half of the year – as long he beats them! Class B could see a good battle develop between Robin Eyre-Maunsell (75 3 litre) and Louise West in her 33 16v.
