DOUBLES FOR DIDGE & DENIS AT DONINGTON

CATEGORIES:

While one half of the BRSCC Midland Centre were running a two day club meeting at the Rockingham Motor Speedway, less than 50 miles up the road the other half of the Centre put on an excellent British F/3/GT meeting at a rain soaked Donington Park.

In the Cooper Tires British F3 International Series there were race wins for Walter Grubmüller and 2008 Formula Ford Festival Champion, Wayne Boyd, his maiden victory in the series. There were scant rewards in terms of points for series leader Daniel Ricciardo, which means that the championship has come alive as it enters its second half, with only 13 points now separating the Carlin run Australian from the Austrian Grubmüller.

In the Avon Tyres British GT Championship Alex Mortimer and Philip Walker claimed the first win of the season for the RPM Motorsport team timing their pit stop to perfection to steal a march on their rivals in a wet two-hour endurance round of the championship. A solid fifth-place finish saw championship leaders David and Godfrey Jones extend their points advantage ahead of Hector Lester, their chief title rival, with just three rounds remaining.

The battle for the lead of the MSA Formula Ford Championship of Great Britain has also come alive after the three Donington Park rounds. American Josef Newgarden closed to within 17 points of season-long series leader James Cole, with Newgarden, Chrissy Palmer and Daniel Erickson sharing the victory spoils.

Meanwhile in the VW Cup, Didge Dziurzynski dominated both rounds of the Hankook backed championship to displace reigning champion Joe Fulbrook from the top of the points standings. In both races, one dry and one in damp conditions, Dziurzynski was certainly the class of the field. He headed home Fulbrook and Cup returnee Tony Gilham in round nine, while in round 10, the impressive Gilham got the better of Fulbrook as the same faces appeared on the podium. "It's been an absolutely brilliant weekend," said an elated Dziurzynski. "I had a bit of a bad start to the second race as I was really struggling with traction but then everything worked out well. Even when the rain came, it didn't unsettle the car at all. I can't fault the car as it's performed brilliantly all weekend. It's definitely going to be a great end to the championship." .

Dziurzynski wasn’t the only double winner at Donington as West Sussex based teenager Dan Denis showed a clean pair of heels to his rivals in both rounds of the Avon Tyres Caterham Superlight R400 Championship to take two more victories and extend his lead at the top of the points table. Tied in second place in the table are Peter Ratcliff and Simon Young who both scored third place finishes at Donington. Making a return to the Superlights as a one off at the weekend was the 2008 champion, David Mayes who followed Denis home in both races.
