A young star of the bike-racing world is to switch from two wheels to four this season to contest the APR Volkswagen Racing Cup. Twenty-three-year-old Josh Caygill is hanging up his leathers to embark on a new career after a bone-breaking accident.

Caygill will race a Golf GTI for the new team formed by the alliance of multiple race winners Aaron Mason and Joe Fulbrook, and Josh is relishing the new challenge: “I was lucky to walk away from my last bike crash with a broken collar bone, shoulder and ribs, and that made up my mind to look for something a bit safer and more enjoyable. I want to compete and to do as well as I can, but also I want to get some fun out of it. The VW Cup looks ideal.”

Josh hopes his extensive knowledge of UK circuits gained through his time racing 600cc machines in the British Supersport Championship will be a benefit, but he is under no illusions that he has much to learn about car-racing: “I had my first test at Donington a month ago and I loved it, even though it was very cold and the track conditions were difficult.

“I am hoping that I can learn as much as possible from Aaron and Joe this season and progress my career on four wheels.”

Cleckheaton-based Caygill is backed by family businesses Volkswagen Van Centre (West Yorkshire) and Van Craft, as well as by fleet management firm SMUK, lovebuddy.com, Doodson Insurance, Close Motor Finance and Impact Repair Centre.

In addition to Mason and Fulbrook, Caygill will join forces in the Warranty Direct/AWM team with Simon Tomlinson, Robin Riley and Simon Andrews. Mason and Riley plan to campaign new Sciroccos while the others race Golfs.

The opening rounds of the 2013 APR Volkswagen Racing Cup take place on Easter Monday, 1 April, at Oulton Park in Cheshire. For more information visit www.vw-cup.co.uk
