Shaun Hollamby is to return to the APR Volkswagen Racing Cup after a six-year absence from the championship. It is confirmed today that he will race a Golf GTI on the Brands Hatch Indy circuit in this weekend’s DTM-supporting rounds.

Hollamby, 46, has an enviable championship record at his local circuit: he won there twice in a Beetle in 2003 and twice again in a Golf R32 in 2005, his swansong appearance in the Volkswagen Racing Cup.

“I don’t think I’ll be repeating that success this time,” said Shaun, boss of the AmD Tuning firm. “In fact the Golf [which belongs to joint championship leader Aaron Mason] is completely rebuilt and won’t have turned a wheel until qualifying. But I am really looking forward to it; it will be fun and I love Brands. This is very much a one-off appearance because I am too busy with the BTCC.”

Hollamby’s normal weekend job is running the AmDTuning.com team which fields the Golf GTI raced by Ollie Jackson in the British Touring Car Championship. Shaun started his circuit-racing career in Formula Vee in 1986 and was Multisport Champion in 1989. His 2005 VW Cup season netted him seven race wins and second in the championship.

Another late addition to the grid – bringing the entry to a championship record-breaking 31 cars – is SlideSports boss Mark Jenkins, who will give his team’s new Mk VI Golf GTI its race debut.

Official qualifying for the Brands Hatch races is tomorrow (Friday) morning, with races on Saturday and Sunday afternoons following the German touring car action.
