Top-level Formula Ford racing returns to the Knockhill circuit this coming weekend (24/25 Aug) after a three-year absence from Scotland, with the traditionally large crowd which gathers for the annual north-of-the-border BTCC meeting assured of a thrilling time as Dan Cammish’s rivals bid to halt his spectacular run of success.

JTR Mygale driver Cammish, 24, has won all 18 races so far and his grip on the Dunlop MSA Formula Ford Championship of Great Britain is now so secure that only a major misfortune can deprive him of the crown. One more victory will see him beat Scott Malvern’s 2011 modern-era record for the most race wins in a season.

Dan was one of the young drivers on the grid for Formula Ford’s 2010 visit to Knockhill, the Yorkshireman making the podium in race one but ending the second with his Kevin Mills Racing Spectrum embedded in a tyre wall. Cammish is not expected to repeat that sort of error but any sign of a chink in his armour would be seized upon by his closest rivals.

Earlier this month, Essex 17-year-old Harrison Scott underlined his credentials as the driver closest to halting Cammish’s victory run thanks to a hat-trick of podium finishes at Snetterton which accelerated him back into championship second. Falcon Motorsport Mygale racer Scott now has a healthy lead in the Scholarship division, too, thanks to nine class wins, the last five of them consecutive.

“The team did a fantastic job all weekend,” said Harrison. “We consolidated second place in the championship and made more progress with our car. We are all learning together and I feel a win is very close. I’m now very confident in the car and while the learning curve is still steep for me I’m confident of improving my results even further.”

Jamun Racing’s trio of hot-shots – South Africa’s Jayde Kruger and Argentinians Nico Maranzana and Juan Rosso – have between them found the second step of the podium on seven occasions this season and the Mygale men may well find that Knockhill’s unique undulations and occasionally cruel weather plays into their hands, although none has any experience of the track.

The other championship top-10 men looking for a breakthrough are Radical Mygale racer James Abbott, the only driver other than Cammish and Maranzana to score in every round; Richardson Racing’s Andy Richardson; and JTR duo Sam Brabham and Camren Kaminsky. American Kaminsky was robbed of a top-five result last time out after a final-corner clash with Kruger, an incident for which Jayde was penalised.

Brabham and Richardson will both be hoping for birthday successes in Scotland – Sam turns 19 next week while Andy will celebrate his 22nd birthday on the Sunday of the Knockhill meeting.

The Knockhill Formula Ford finale on Sunday afternoon will be screened live on ITV4. You can follow all the weekend’s action via Twitter @FormulaFordGB and the championship’s new audio iTunes podcast service
