Following the successful ‘Howard’s Day’ meeting last year, jointly run with the Castle Combe Racing Club, our South Western Centre returns to Combe on Bank Holiday Monday for its own meeting – the first for nine years!

Leading the way are both of our Mazda championships and they will be turning out in great numbers. Forty-eight Mk1s are entered for the BRSCC Mazda MX-5 Championship, while twenty-nine Mk3s will contest the BRSCC Mazda MX-5 SuperCup.

The last outing for the Mk1s was on the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit two weeks ago and although he didn’t score a race win, the consistency of Simon Baldwin earned him two second place finishes and so the Reigate driver arrives at the fast Wiltshire circuit with an increased lead at the top of the points table.

However, with a hundred points available for a race win Darron Lewis, who was a Brands Hatch race winner, is in hot pursuit. Meanwhile, there is a less than orderly queue of rivals forming up behind Lewis, all determined to chip away at Baldwin’s lead. Chief amongst those is Bedfordshire teenager Ben Tuck who impressed at Brands Hatch.

The SuperCup competitors also had a prestigious previous round, supporting the Avon Tyres British GT race weekend at Rockingham at the beginning of May and they return to Castle Combe for the first time since April 2013, which was in fact the inaugural round of the BRSCC Championship! Just seven cars took to the grid then but since 2013 the championship has truly blossomed and packed grids are now the norm.

So far two drivers have made a clear statement about their intentions for this season; Jonathan Clements and Alan Henderson have each won two races from the first four rounds and sit at the top of the points table. Chasing them hard however, are the likes of Simon Goddard, James Blake-Baldwin and Liam Murphy.

We have had a late flurry of entries for the Dave Allan Trophy which an annual race in memory of former Honda test & race driver Dave Allan. The race is made possible by the support of Honda of the UK Manufacturing and it is designed to enable even the slowest car the opportunity to win due to an open declared handicap designed to equal out performance of all competitors. Additionally, the forty-five minute race gives competitors an affordable opportunity to sample Endurance racing.

The rest of the ten race schedule is made up of Castle Combe’s three ‘home’ championships – Special GTs, Saloons and Formula Fords. You can find out more information about those at http://www.ccracingclub.co.uk/championships/

The weather at Combe on Monday looks like it shouldn’t cause too many problems as it is forecast to be dry but cloudy all day. You can see a detailed forecast at CASTLE COMBE WEATHER
