WHAT A DIFFERENCE A WEEK MAKES!

Close, exciting racing finally came to Silverstone, albeit a week, late in the shape of our Midland Centre two day meeting last Saturday & Sunday. The first of the 17 races was won by Simon Robinson in the BRS Recovery Ford XR Challenge despite close attention from Steve Poole, Paul Bishop & Michael Blackburn. The BRSCC Super Mighty Minis provided everything the GP lacked – Gary Patterson who started from 15th battled his way through the field to edge out Peter Crewes and Neil Slark.

In the first of three races for the Webcon UK Club National Formula Ford Championship the Post 89 Class of the Creative LED Solutions FF Northwest Championship saw a dominant display by Scot Rory Butcher who beat Scott Malvern by 10 seconds. The BRSCC Mighty Minis continued in a similar vein to their faster cousins with Chris Morgan beating James Lyford on the line after a race long fight – the two of them never straying more than ½ a second apart all race.

In the Pre 90 Formula Fords Justin Dawkins survived several first lap incidents to win ahead of Nigel Thompson & John Farrell. Next up was a rolling start for the BRSCC LMA Euro Saloons which produced a dominant display by the Mitsubishi Evo 9 of Lawrence Kilby, who came home 30 seconds ahead of Benji Hetherington.

The BRSCC Formula 3 Cardinus Championship produced the fastest cars of the weekend and Edwin Jowsey completed a treble of pole position, fastest lap and a win. Saturday’s action closed with another race long duel in the Motorlawyers Fiat Racing Challenge – Jason Greatrex coming out victorious after trailing James Levy for 11 laps.

The BRS Recovery XR Challenge began Sunday’s preceedings and like the first race, a dominant performance from Robinson from the back of the grid led to a win, despite a Safety Car intervention after George Dwane embedded his Fiesta into the pit wall. Gary Patterson and Scott Kendall renewed their Saturday battle in Super Mighty Minis but with Kendall coming out on top by a tenth of a second! Ben Seyfried came from 17th to finish third. The Mighty Mini’s followed after the lunch with a four way tussle for the lead, won by James Lyford ahead of Louise Inch and Matt Pinny.

In the LMA Euro Saloons, Benji Hetherington’s Ginetta G50 took advantage when Lawrence Kilby’s Mitsubishi Evo suffered a mechanical problem. In the Formula 3 Cardinus Championship, Edwin Jowsey won again, with Chris Needham beaten to third by Damien Charveriat. The Motorlawyers Fiat Racing Challenge again featured Jason Greatrex winning, this time from his brother Kris in his Fiat Uno. The BRSCC Alfashop Alfa Romeo Championship race was marred by an accident involving Will Inglis which required Safety Car intervention for 3 laps. Tim Lewis won the race lapping the entire field apart from second placed Roger Evans.

The rain started to fall just as the Club Formula Ford Midlands South Championship in association with Richard Egger Insurance (also a round of the National Championship) warmed up. A number of experienced and novice drivers fell foul of the weather, but Scott Malvern showed his mastery of the conditions ahead of David Grady and Matt Rivett.

The final race of the day was an hour endurance for the SRCC Sports 2000 cars, won by Chris Yarwood in his MCR Sportscar ahead of Russell and Bates in their Van Diemen RF98 by 15 seconds.

The next BRSCC Midland Centre meeting is at Rockingham on 18-19th July.
