WILSON v WILSON IN 2012 VW CUP

CATEGORIES:

The Volkswagen Racing Cup is set to gain another father and son team in 2012 with the news that Jonathan Wilson is to follow in the wheeltracks of his 19-year-old son, Thomas, and take to the tracks.

Wilson senior has bought the Volkswagen Scirocco campaigned in recent seasons by Mike Kurton and will make his circuit racing debut in the championship next season alongside his Golf GTI-driving offspring.

“I have always been a petrolhead but have never had the chance to race before,” said 45-year-old Jonathan. “I have so enjoyed helping Thomas with his first season in the Volkswagen Racing Cup that when the opportunity arose to join him on the grid, it was one I could not pass up. I think it could get a bit competitive between us.”

Thomas enjoyed an impressive first season of motorsport in 2010 in his Powerstation-prepared Volkswagen, taking joint fifth position with veteran Steve Wood; his best finish came in the final round at Silverstone, where he missed the podium by only 1.5s.

The Wiltshire-based duo has backing from construction businesses JRL Group and Molson.

“The Volkswagen Racing Cup has attracted fathers and their sons ever since its early years,” said Sam Roach, of championship promoter RacingLine. “Martyn and Barrie Culley entertained us for many seasons, Peter and Paul Wyhinny, Paul and Tony Taylor – they have all enjoyed the paddock camaraderie and family feel for which the series is justly famous. I am sure Jonathan and Thomas will have a great time also.”
